Magazines Part II

1. Image Based
Image based covers are the most common and usually have a group of people or just one person. In a lot of celebrity, fashion, and men’s magazines, they have people looking at the camera and smiling. Also, some magazines have models looking away, tilt the camera, not smiling, etc. Travel magazines will have a landscape on it. A food magazine will have a meal for the cover. The photo has to tie with what the magazine is about.

2. Illustration Based
Illustration based covers used to be the only way to have a picture on the magazine. Now they are used to portray something odd or funny. Magazine companies that do use this don’t need to sell their magazines on newsstands. Now magazine companies make their illustrations on computers. A magazine company that still uses illustrated magazine covers is The New Yorker.

3. Type Based
Type based covers are seen more than illustrated covers but are rare to see. They also seem to have more impact than the other covers. It can also get a message across better than an illustrated cover could. The most famous typed based cover is “Oh My God, We Hit a Little Girl!” by George Lois. Type based covers are starting to get more common same with handwritten fonts and calligraphy.

4. Concept Based
Concept based covers is a mix of all 3 types of covers. It is used to give a strong message, point out something funny, or odd. This is the hardest out of all the covers since people have to understand what you’re trying to say through the cover. This cover is also rare and is usually used in business magazines, news magazines and independent magazines. The best magazines that use this are British magazine Stylist, Spanish Metropoli and Bloomberg Businessweek, and New York Times Magazine.

What is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?
The words and photos on a magazine cover have to give the same message to get their point across or else people will get confused and not buy it.
